Apple intends to release a version equipped with a USB-C port from the second generation of AirPods Pro headphones, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Qiu, who is famous for his accurate leaks related to the company's products.
The company is expected to start shipping the AirPods Pro with a USB-C case during the second or third quarter of this year. (Q) indicated that Apple apparently has no plans to release a USB-C version of the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3.
Apple's move comes as a bow to a law passed by the European Union last year, which obliges manufacturers of electronic devices to use the USB-C standard and prevents devices that support non-standard standards from being offered in charging ports by the fall of 2024. Apple, which adopts its own Lightning port standard, has opposed the European bill. strongly, but failed to persuade the European Parliament Committee to disavow it, and was finally forced to obey the law, in order to avoid any fines or a possible ban on its products in the European market.
The law represents an attempt to reduce e-waste in the European Union by making chargers for electronic devices compatible with each other. In the future, lawmakers hope that phones will not need a charger in the box; Because buyers have the right charger and cord at home. The European Union estimates that the law could save consumers up to 250 million euros a year in unnecessary charger purchases and reduce around 11,000 tons of e-waste annually.
Apple released the second generation of AirPods Pro last September, which features a Lightning port and is compatible with MagSafe and Qi wireless charging standards. It is not yet clear if the updated AirPods Pro version will come with any additional changes.
And leaked photos of Apple phones coming from the iPhone 15 series showed support for the USB-C charging port, confirming that all Apple devices coming this year will support the standard charging port.
The USB-C charging port supports a faster data transfer rate compared to the Lightning port, and higher charging power thanks to the USB-PD Power Delivery standard. On the other hand, the Lightning port is smaller, which gives Apple the advantage of making thinner devices.
